Hi. I have an 1800 automatic, mark 2, 1969. built in Australia, I believe. I have the opportunity to purchase a manual, 1970, mark 2, with a rust free body, but dead motor. I'm wondering whether my auto engine and box will go into the manual without encountering major structural problems like different engine mounts or bulkhead/crossmember differences. Anyone tried to do this swap or know of any pitfalls? Thanks, Colin.

Hi Colin We have heard of automatics being converted to manual as the automatic box spares are drying up. As far as I can recollect there shouldn't be any major problems as the body engine and transmission mountings are the same. You should use the drive shafts from the automatic and you will of course need to modify the dash to accommodate the change mechanism. Australian specific modifications were introduced with the Mk11 in 1968 although early Mk11 cars had some components from MK1 models. These were related to increasing the road clearance, better sealing against dust and the use of locally made components such as the brakes (dual circuit PBR vs Girling single circuit). Australian made cars have a chassis number starting YHS.
