Sunday morning saw me beetling off down to Beeston in Leeds to help Stuart sort out his back brakes. This is Ron up in Scotland's old car. It was driven back down south about 9 months ago. Being a slightly older gent, he's not up to crawling around on the floor much these days, so leak hunting has come down to me, as well as the rear brakes. This is Stuart cleaning up the brake drum whilst I dealt with the shoes. It is on a stand - all quite straightforward, really. The other leak is the seals on the access panels on the bottom of the gearbox. We can drain the autobox and take them off for gaskets/sealing, but we're slightly reluctant due to the selector cables. Sounds daft? Might be, 'cos I've never worked on one and neither has Stuart. That's the selector cables; there are two of them. The TOP cable is the "select" cable. The LOWER cable is the "park" cable. The top cable is not connected, but the bottom one is. The car selects gears and drives, but "park" doesn't work. When the selector is moved, both output rods move. Logically, my mind is thinking that the cable connected at the bottom is the SELECT cable and the disconnected upper one one is the PARK cable. Perhaps they are back to front? I really don't know enough about this to make a judgement and the three different WM manuals we have are as clear as mud. Any advice appreciated. P45.
