That's.... interesting. It's not rust, just stress, so you could drill out the ends of the cracks, grind the cracks into a bit of a groove and weld. Should finish up nice and solid.

I agree stress crack for sure. I wonder if it is related to having the "S" top stabiliser fitted to the car?

Anyone seen this little beasty! How cool! It is electric with about a 100 mile range! I was waiting around yesterday and got to wondering what the Chinese might be doing with the Austin brand, only to discover that it is now back in British ownership. This is the Austin Arrow prototype. Apparently, the Austin motor company UK are going to make them. I want One! Nick

Hi All
I have been trying hard to get the last work done on the car over the last 3 weeks. Which I have had off. Lots of hours and still lots to do!
No pictures sorry as it takes up time, especially when you are continuously covered in grease and dirt and don't want to touch anything!
Over the time I have finished the welding on the body, cleaned up painted the engine bay and painted and undersealed the external floor area.
I have stripped the paint from the front up to the doors and primed. There are some small dings that I have to fill before topcoat. I was going to topcoat first but had an issue so moved to other jobs.
I have cleaned repaired and painted the front displacer tube and displacers and refitted them with big CV boots to protect the diaphrams.
As of today I have finished dismanting all the suspension components, sandblasting painting and fitted new rubbers etc etc. Including rebuilding the drive shafts with auto hardy spicer joints on the diff side. Very annoying dirty and time consuming that was!
I have repaired a leaking seal on the power steering rack painted and refitted it.
I have a little more sandblasting to do on one brake disk shield, then the hubs and suspension are ready to be refitted.
As I said I was going to paint the front of the car before this, but the issue I discovered was I can't get the front doors open far enough to remove them. The hoist is in the way. Somewhat of an oversight on my part! I need to unbolt the wings to clean a little section underneath and align them a little better before paint.
Anyway, moving forward I will probably do some suspension pipework and fuel and brake lines, so I can refit the engine. I will then put the front suspension and hubs back together. I don't want to make it harder to get the engine back in by having drive shafts in the way. Then the car can come off the hoist and get a bit of topcoat.
As soon as I have finished the front paint, I am back to the rear, which also needs paint. Then its interior work, so still lots of jobs left to do.
September deadline looming!
Nick

Good stuff, Nick. All these smaller jobs mount up until they look like a mountain to climb. Keep at it, the end is definitely a lot nearer now.
Chris.

You've certainly been very busy, patient and thorough. We are eagerly awaiting the completion. It's been a long journey from removing asbestos back in England to where you are today!

Thanks for the encouragement.
The engine went back in last week followed by the front suspension. I found a couple of issues there that I didn't notice during the clean up. The driver side wheel bearing was starting get a small spot on the running surface, and on the other side a rather worn drive flange spline with lots of play! The CV spline was good luckily, as I already spent a heap of time cleaning, regreased and painting it! Good bits found and fitted.
Brake pipes are now made up and connected for the front calipers. Tie bars and torpedoes cleaned up, painted and refitted.
OKR is now off the hoist so I can get the front doors off finally.
Yesterday I messed around trying to make the horns fit back in with the oil cooler where it is. Success eventually and they worked too, which I was happy about given the difficulty getting them in!
Today I repaired the servo bracketry and refitted it, and the servo. The last bit of brake piping, still to do, will connect the servo which I will probably do tomorrow.
I also had good success with the 3D printer making a new clip for the radiator expansion tank bracket. For some reason the left hand bracket screw goes into a little plastic clip in the firewall, (broken) and the right is a spot welded on metal type.
After making the servo pipes I will probably start putting the peddle box back and the master cylinders in.
Another win. The AC condenser fits perfectly up front and only needs a couple of simple brackets. I think I can even get a fan in without too much trouble. It will of course be completely in the way when working on the distributor etc, but I plan to connect it with hoses so if need be it can be moved out of the way without degasing. I will post some photos of that when I complete the finer details of the fit.
Odd thing now it is back on the ground it seems really low to the ground. Like a gocart!

Hi Nick You have certainly achieved a lot since your last post, maybe September is still possible! I'm a little concerned at access to the distributor is going to be difficult in light of the modifications we have discussed which I anticipate will form part of a thread to give Chris nightmares in the future! If it low to the ground like a go-cart are you sure you have put the wheels back on. David [ quote author=" 1800heap" source="/post/17794/thread" timestamp="1690705393"]Thanks for the encouragement. WHEELS! I knew there was something I forgot to put on! David Pictures Andrew, OK here we go! Underside done. Slot the engine back in from underneath. A much easier way to do it, as you can have all the bits attached. You do need a hoist though! This is the AC condenser fitted. No pipework though. Since this photo, the bonnet platform has been sand blasted and undercoated. Obviously, it still will require a fan but there is space between it and the grill, which I thought might end up tighter than it actually did. It is a bit hard to see with this picture but there is some space. You can still get to the belts ok with grill removed. Everything else needs to be worked on from above. It is still workable though David, I am glad to say. I still need to work on finishing the ignition unit too. First things first, get the car back together and painted. Yesterday I spent virtually all day working on the wipers, just to test the patience! Borrowed a good set from the Australian crab but kept the dual speed motor from OKR. It worked out in the end although to my disgust the Australian wiper motor has a different thread to the UK Lucus, resulting in me having to remove the first section of tube, already cleaned and painted! I had to use the one from OKR to make it fit on OKR'S motor. Awkward to fit I must say. GRRR! Today I got the fuel pipe done front to back and was very happy with how it turned out. I took your advice David and changed over to metal filter. I used a common and relatively cheap one found here in Australia. Wanting to make it easy to change, I went with flare connections. Also I have a flaring tool, so they are easy to do thought I. Little did I known that the tube nuts to fit the common filter were almost impossible to get off the shelf here in Australia! A unusual metric size in a tube nut I am told. Anyway, my work around was to order two very expensive tails form Ford that are used to connect to this type of filter. Job done although $60 for two tube nuts was rather expensive. I should reap the benefits in ease of change and low filter cost though. As you can see I did have a radical re-think about where I had space to put it! Nick

That is just amazing, a real piece of art. It almost seems a shame to drive it and get it dirty. As far as in car entertainment goes if it were me I would just enjoy listening to the B series clatter and whine - showing my age . David

The Sound system will be on the list at some point after the car is on the road Andrew. I also like the B series sounds David, particularly with the S extractors and a slightly noisy exhaust! The plan though is go modern touch screen, with both apple carplay and android auto. I have not found a suitable unit yet though. Everybody in the family has Apple except me so I am trying to appeal to all possible users! I have to make them like the car somehow! My daughter got a double din head unit for her swift and I installed it for her. They are good I have to say. Since then my wife has jumped on the band wagon with a double din Apple carplay unit for her Toyota. The issue is of course the crab is single din. There is a temptation to make it a double din, as there is sufficient space with a suitable mod to the dash. Not requiring an ash tray, I could use the space. The alternative is a single din unit with a double din screen that attaches to the face. Trouble is the slot is set back enough to make the fit a bit awkward. So currently the installation is not a solved problem. It should come to me eventually if I ponder the problem long enough. Nick
