Hi Chris.
Nice engine hoist! Did you manage to cut out the rust on the inner wing and sort the brakes?
Regards
David

Sorry, I did post an up-date, but it seems to have disappeared... Going up Out and away. About a 4' lift, as it had to be swung over the wing to clear the car. Big scrape up the bulkhead - the diff does that. Caught the slam panel as well - that'll pull straight easily. Inner wing revealed........ Tickled with wire brush and angle grinder.......... Rot chopped out with angle grinder and slitting disc. The whole area has been buzzed back with a wire brush and treated with rust killer. P45.

Lurking in the engine bay in order to make a suitable template, I was snuck up on by MrsP who got this one with a happy cry of "Gotcha!" Side panel from a SMEG dishwasher provided the metal plate for the big hole. 7mm holes drilled all the way around the edge for plug welding, before seaming the outer edges. In place. There will be 4 panels altogether. Additionally, there will be two "L" sections welded on in the outer part of the wing above and below the forward chassis member; then a reinforcing panel for the bumper mounting. Upper "L" section in place. My welding tends to be functional, rather than pretty, so hopefully this little lot will tidy up with the grinder and flap wheel. About half-way there now, more in a day or two. Chris.

Good work Chris, you wouldnt have hit the slam panel if you had an Austin or Morris! Are you painting the engine whilst you're at it?
Its going to be a very nice machine when back together..

Paint it? Basic plan is to do the clutch and thrust washers whilst the engine is out. To do the thrust washers, the engine has got to come off the gearbox, so I might as well fit new bearing shells whilst I'm in there. If I'm going that far, I might as well do new rings and give the bores a hone whilst I'm at it. Spare cylinder head is going off for the unleaded conversion; if Drakes are in a good mood and not too busy, they might just clean up the porting a bit for me ;D. I have accumulated new gaskets and seals for everything and a new tappet chest cover with the breather on it, so it is possible that I'll finish with an oil-tight engine. Stop sniggering at the back...... Oh - then I'll paint it..... After the engine bay. I think I've started with the bodywork as it's a confidence thing. I'm not at all bothered about chopping stuff out and welding - I will admit to some nervousness about pulling the engine apart. Chris.

That lot will keep you busy for a few days then!
A very fiddly, frustrating and time consuming bit of hard graft but ultimately very satisfying when you have done. Hopefully we will get the obligatory photo diary very soon.
It only took me 6 months to do what you are doing. Minus engine work. And welding. Ahem.

Cheers, chaps. Got some more done this evening; I think I'm just about done with the welding in there. Still needs a proper clean up - grinding disc has taken off the worst of the lumpy bits - flap wheel to follow. Inside is now fully seamed, couple of little extra bits added above the front bumper mount and over a rather substantial blow hole. Inside the outer wing - both "L" sections welded in and a substantial reinforcing plate added for the rear bumper mounting. Again, roughly ground back, so flap wheel to make it a bit tidier. Hopefully get into that tomorrow afternoon, then blast it all with some high zinc primer. I have spotted daylight through the other inner wing, below the radiator grill, so I suspect that we're not quite done yet....... Chris.

I'm really impressed! I went to night school to learn basic welding skills but remain very apprehensive about any body repairs. On the other hand the 1800 engine / gearbox is quite straight forward to take apart, just time consuming cleaning up all the mating surfaces. You've already done half of the hard job, taking it out. The Austin/Morris is easier than the Wolseley as you can take out the grill and the cross member that engages the bonnet. Regards David Oh - then I'll paint it..... After the engine bay. Cheers, David. Managed to spend most of today on the car. Panel shown above has had a blow over of primer and the edges have been coated with seam sealer. Took out the braces from the front panel and set to wire brushing the surface rust out. This led to two holes developing in the back of the lower cross member, by the engine mount bracket. Cut it all out and welded in a couple of panels: Quite straightforward really, just flat plates. These are now fully welded and ground back. Moved over to the left hand wing, which was bulging inwards into the radiator. Using the universal adjuster, I attempted to push it back out into line. A large piece immediately fell off..... Attacked it with the grinder and wire brush: Ho, hum, here we go again..... Opened it up to a more regular shape and welded in a heavy plate. That's pretty d@mn solid, but I'll have to make up some delicate little bits to repair the grill bit. Hmmm - artistic welding........ Always something new to learn. Chris.

Any chance you can take a few more shots of the cross member? I'll be tackling Jasper's soon and there not much left to make a pattern on really.

Oh, yes - good call seeing as the engine is out. I'll sort it later for you and take some measurements.
Chris.

I'll sort it later for you and take some measurements. Many thanks. I did have one lined up in Middlesbrough, but the seller never came back to me with postage charge. www.wolseleyworld.com/mr-noticeboard.php"Front cross member new £25"
