I'm saddened to note the passing of Paddy Hopkirk, the legendary rally driver at 89 years old. He's remembered by most for winning the 1964 Monte Carlo rally in a Mini. We probably remember him best for his valiant efforts in the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon in SMO 226G. BBC OBITUARY. C.

Sad news indeed. A real legend in my teenage years.
I think that the moral victor of the 1968 London Sydney Rally was either Bianchi in his Citroen DS or Paddy Hopkirk. Bianchi would almost certainly have won if not for the head on crash with a private vehicle that should not have been in a supposedly closed stage. Paddy Hopkirk who was lying second stopped to help release the injured drivers. With Bianchi out of the race and Paddy Hopkirk helping him, Andrew Cowan took advantage of the situation and claimed first place. I still feel this was unjust but I am probably biased. Cowan’s victory seemed even more hollow as the BMC crew had earlier pulled his Hunter out of a ditch enabling him to continue in the rally, but rules are rules!
