Many thanks for the clear description of the course of events. So the system for the classic cars is basically the same as for vehicles for which you have to pay road tax. That certainly makes sense.

The Wolseley and I parted company last week. I still own it for now but it is consigned for auction on the 25th of this month with Mathewsons who are in North Yorkshire. Derek Mathewson collected it on the return leg of a round trip to deliver and collect other cars. We had a good chat about auctions and what sells and what doesn't and I was impressed with his knowledge and friendliness. I am happy to see it go and have no regrets. I had only covered about 200 miles since the last MOT at the end of last summer and my desire to move it on back then hasn't really gone away, so why wait?
I will take my time getting a replacement and may even go for something else from the rich seam of BMC-Rover group or beyond. I'm staying with this forum though as my Landcrab interest is still very strong.

Cheers for the update Nick.
Glad to hear you're staying with us, like you say, it's about the interest of the cars.

It's gone.
Sold via the auction to a private buyer in the North East.

I rang up the insurers today to remove the car from my policy. Although the risk is small there is a possiblilty that an uninsured driver could cause mayhem with it and if I was still on the insurance database against the car then the liability would fall to me. There doesn't seem to be an option to leave the policy live with no car on it (at least with Lancaster anyway) so I had to cancel. My policy had been running for six months. Things like valuation fee, admin fee and legal benefits are non refundable. The residual of the refundable amount was then wiped out by the cancellation fee leaving me with exactly zero. Not too happy about that but not surprised either. I could have taken the risk and waited until getting another car and just swapped over and saved myself a few quid, but then again, that risk - not worth taking really.

Hi Nick,
I thought it went for a very fair price.
Insurance companies do my head in. There are times when I really don't understand the mentality. I added the Austin onto my existing 18/85 policy with Footman James for a very reasonable £36. £25 of that was an admin fee!
I imagine though that you would be disinclined to return to Lancaster when you choose to insure your next classic. They don't help themselves.
Chris.

Chris, Yes, very fair, I think they must have had a fair bit of interest and a few bidders. The price on their site includes all the commissions paid by both me and the buyer so my net proceeds are approx £600 less than stated. Even so a great result considering all I had to do was a few phone calls and e-mails. From my experience I would recommend Mathewsons to anyone who wants to sell a vehicle without the eBay or Classifieds tales of grief you often hear about. I just let them get on with it and was more than happy to trust them with looking after the car and presenting it well. (MGB description notwithstanding). Be realistic with your reserve price and you should be happy.
As for Lancaster, I think they are all much the same with their admin fees and the like but I will probably give a different firm the business next time around. Their admin fee was such that I would have had to give them some more money but the Lady in their customer services reduced that to give the zero net effect without waiting for me to react - must be standard procedure. FJ seem to be well regarded.
