Not sure about slipflex and gearbox bearing. I guess Tony Wood, LOCI, may have the answer. perhaps www.earlpart.co.uk have something. Diaphragms: I've used MGB/ Mini/ Land Rover ones found on www.ebay.co.uk. Not sure about quality, but better than nothing, or a split rock hard old one Regards, Tommy

Slipflex bearing has long been a problem in the UK. However, LOCI has engineered a conversion kit to solve the problem. Contact spareathought [AT] landcrab.net and ask Tony for details. He supplies world wide. Probably worth the membership fee in itself. Bearings are bearings - any competent transmission place should be able to track down both metric and imperial bearings. There are several discussions about PCVs on the forum, most recently HERE. I got rid of mine . Chris.

Hi Chris I seemed to have missed the availability of the Slipflex conversion kits and this alone has focused my search on MK1 cars only, limiting my choice. Do you have any outline details, it's not so easy to speak to Tony from here and I have heard rumours he isn't really an email man! Thanks David Slipflex bearing has long been a problem in the UK. I spoke to Tony Wood a couple of hours ago and mentioned this. He does still have stock of the Slipflex bearings. Another option is to have the suspension arms modified by someone Tony knows who replaces the Slipflex bearings with a bronze bush and machines the arms. But this would mean shipping them to and from Australia which would be costly for you. Unfortunately it is not a kit as such. LOCI has a number of overseas members (me included) now LOCA has been wound up I would recommend joining. There is even a discount for members willing to receive the quarterly magazines as a PDF. Strange - the word "Slipflex" has always been met with much shaking of heads in my experience!
Also curious that Simmo is after gearbox bearings. They are totally immersed in oil, so seems odd that they would be damaged.
Chris.

Maybe Tony has found a "new" Slipflex stock from somewhere. I was surprised too as I understood from a number of sources they were very hard or impossible to find - hence the LOCI fix. My Austin Ambassador's (2.0HLS) gearbox bearings failed spectacularly at <50K miles which I put down to the general malaise of poor quality control. I never had any problems with 1800 gearbox bearings even at extremely high mileages >200K. David Strange - the word "Slipflex" has always been met with much shaking of heads in my experience! Hi, Chris, the common quality control problem with manual boxes is the main gear set shaft is installed the wrong way, there's a oil gallery that runs thru the shaft and exits into main bearing housing, even though the gears and bearings are bathed in oil, if the oil exits shaft to gear set it induces wear at the bearing in question. Simmo.

Simmo Have you come across gearboxes assembled wrongly from the factory? Nothing would surprise me about cars from Longbridge in the 70s but I thought Australia had a better record (cars not cricket ) Regards David Hi, Chris, the common quality control problem with manual boxes is the main gear set shaft is installed the wrong way, there's a oil gallery that runs thru the shaft and exits into main bearing housing, even though the gears and bearings are bathed in oil, if the oil exits shaft to gear set it induces wear at the bearing in question. David It's hard to answer, I've had no experience ex factory as I was a boy when these cars where constructed, There either right or there not, unfortunately there's only one way to find out, engine out box off and stripped, but if your getting abox rebuilt that's the time to check its the right way round. (as far as cricket is concerned, credit has to given where it's due, I can't see the Ashes coming this way for some time, but that South Africa A team is very good) Simmo.

I think there may be one or two people here (me included) who would appreciate photos of the job and your tips for replacing a slip flex bearing. I know my local BL garage would as they managed to screw one up when I decided to let them do the job as they had the correct tools (allegedly). regards David Hi all Contacted Tony Wood the other week and am know the owner of 4 slip flex bearings, 2 for the ute and 2 for the Saloon, that should keep my Rustin's on the road till I'm done.
