It does begin to sound like a split or broken weld, Steve. I'd be interested to see a picture or two of the damage if you can, Andrew.

It does - but not convinced! Other thing I'm going to try today is this! I cross drilled the rubber engine mounts and put big bolts through and I'm just wondering.... Also have annoying rattle in rear door - had it all apart - isolated everything - still there - sounds like a rattly sender unit unit does - but it isn't that!

That's an easy one - door handle draw wires.

You're right - wedged bit of wood in and noise gone - thanks. Is there a way of effecting a more permanent and better looking fix?

There's supposed to be a plastic guide piece where the wire goes from inside to outside and a plastic steady about hald way along. i think I glued some off-cuts of sound deadening felt under my ones.

Thanks for that - the duct tape was a perfect suggestion. There are no rattles at all from the door now...the only minor inconvenience is that you can't open the door or wind down the window anymore - but as I only have rear passengers once a year it's not a great hindrance and a small price to pay for silence.

Squeak saga continues. Removed cross drilled bolts from engine mounts and everything much smoother - no huge surprise there - but no reduction in squeak - which if you remember seems to be coming from drivers footwell-ish. Put fat bloke behind me in back of car - no squeak. Removed fat bloke from rear and put him in passenger seat - squeak very rare and almost inaudible. Any ideas/suggestions - I do appreciate this is a gift to the wags out there!

Certainly tempted to suggest carrying a fat man everywhere but it would hamper performance. On a more serious note is it worth removing the carpet and rear seat to see if the location of the squeak can be determined? Did you have photos of the sill repairs as what you describe could be flexing that diminshes with preload, just a wild guess.

Go on then. I will say it....... Carry two fat men. But as said, economy and performance could be compromised.
I would lift lift the carpet and check for cracks in any weld or joint you can see. Also check the joints and welds at the bottom of the door pillar.
Alternatively are we all trying to over think this. Assuming the fat bloke was actually sat on the back seat when the sound stopped could it simply be the rear seat not located in the seat well properly and the weight has pushed it into place.

Do you still have the fancy seats in. Could the noise be coming from the frame or runners.

I took all seats out and drove it around and noise still there! I think instead of hopping around I'm going to work through each component in the suspension methodically and properly eliminate each one and then move on from there. Will keep you posted!

Right - back on the rear door ! Wires all isolated and culprit appears to be side to side play in the gubbins that moves when you press the button on the outside door handle. A pain to get at and no obvious means of tightening it up - any tips on how to rectify?

That's looking impressive with a nice flat torque curve over a very useful rpm range, good for rallies, road use and track.
